So I was watching this video blog called indy mogul, and it was pretty cool. They do cheap DIY movie effects. Like putting puddy in pantyhose soaked in fake blood to make fake intestines. Smart. But during one of the adverts there was a guy talking about blogging, and what he said got me thinking. His main point was that most blogs are someone taking something already created and giving their personal take on it. If you take that description and apply it to music, what do you get? The sampling that is done in hip hop. What hip hop does with audio, bloggers are doing with most all medias. It isn't a direct correlation, but it's pretty close and it kinda gives a glimpse into what media will be in the future. Instead of having large corporations producing all media, smaller independent companies are producing more and more high quality media. Like higher quality music available to hip hop artists through modern computers and cheaper technologies, the same is happening for videos. More and more indie flicks are showing up and the advent of the video blog shows just how easy it is to create video and spread it out. And if it is good, it will spread. The MTV culture takes in and digests more information then ever before. Most anything out there that is capable of becoming the next big thing has the highest chance of reaching that title than ever before. Memes prove this point. If anything is easily reproduced or spread and is worth the attention and effort to keep it moving, it will do it for a long time or until it completely saturates the population.
This is the time to create things. The urge to do something with our time has always been there, but it is much easier now to feed it into the social testing ground. Isn't it wonderful?

It's wonderful, in an ideal world. Now we need the rest of society to catch up. Lawrence Lessig has done a lot of writing/speaking on this subject.
ReplyDeleteThe issue we run into with resampling video/music, or building on others materials, is copyright. Technically, taking some song someone wrote, re-sampling it, or putting your own spin on it, is copyright infringement. Particularly if you distribute it, which can be as simple as a "Hey guys, check out this cool thing I did" post on your blog.
I think it's really really cool how our generation is pushing the boundaries using technology, but we're forcing the issue on copyright and copyright infringement, and the system is pushing back pretty hard.
Not that anyone would want to, but I license all my blog postings and Photos I upload to Picasa under Creative Commons, on the off chance someone would want to use it, they can.
Huh, that's a really interesting comparison between hip-hop and blogs--I've never thought about it that way, and now that you mention it I can definitely see the similarities. Oh, musings at 4 in the morning... so glorious. You may enjoy this:

It's interesting though, because we are getting more quantity, along with more quality, but since there is so much of everything (music, movies, blogs) it makes a lot of fractures in society. Which could be good or bad, depending on how you look at it.
